day 329: in the light

Yesterday I managed to get soaked feet, because it was pouring down like crazy and the U6 wasn’t running between Friedrichstraße and Französische Straße. Apart from that I went around town with my Zorki and shot quite a few pictures. I’m not entirely sure whether I got all exposure settings right, mainly because I might have had the wrong ISO setting on my light meter. Oh well, I’ll see what comes of it in a couple of days, because I actually managed to finish the film. Now I loaded up the camera with some Ilford HP5 black and white film for the next round of pictures.

So, since I didn’t take any digital pictures yesterday I’m posting another picture from the day before. This was taken near the station Gesundbrunnen.

    • Thank you Elena! I also really like the light in this one. That’s probably why I had to stop in the middle of the road to take the picture 😉

  2. It’s a delightful photograph. I really love all the details you can hardly make out in the darkness and the faded light from the post. Like the persons to the left. Also all the different kinds squares in the pictures enhances the composition. The tones are lovely – even if you missed the exposure settings. Fun that you are shooting with a Zorki. (And by the way sorry for having been absent lately, I just haven’t had time to comment the last couple of weeks).

    • Thank you 🙂 I actually like that it’s dark in most of the picture, since I precisely liked the light and dark juxtaposition. I was already at the limit of what I could do without setting up a tripod in the middle of the street and I didn’t have my fast lens on me. And of course the advertising pillar would have blown out too much as well. To make it an even exposure would probably only be possible with HDR, and that’s not my cup of tea anyway.

Glad you’re back from your travels! Would love to visit Warsaw!

      • I think HDR would have destroyed the picture, so in my eyes you did the right thing. Yes, Warsaw is quite a city.

      • Isn’t it strange how popular HDR has become? There are hardly any pictures where it really works and the rest just looks like cheap computer animation!

Wow, this really turned out fantastic…I agree about the HDR for this image…you made the most out of it!

    • Thanks Tammy 🙂 Shadows are the soul of a picture. Probably that’s why I don’t like HDR.

  5. I love the glow! This would be a wonderful piece even without the passing figures… which seem to make it all that much cooler!
    (I shot a LOT of Ilford when I had access to a darkroom… I really miss it…)
